Jason Graves Says Modern Warfare 4’s Gameplay and Audio Team Fueled the Score

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s soundtrack drew its energy from the action on screen, with composer Jason Graves saying the game itself supplied an ongoing flow of ideas for the multiplayer music. He also pointed to Infinity Ward’s audio crew as a major force behind the sound, helping shape the project’s mood and direction.

In a conversation about where he starts when building music for such a well-known series, Graves said he never felt short on ideas because the gameplay was already so strong. He added that the audio director Stephen Miller and the rest of the sound group were a major creative presence, while Jonathan Mayer and the music team played a key role in defining the atmosphere and giving him room to work freely.

Graves, whose credits include Warzone, Dead Space, Dead Space 2, the 2013 Tomb Raider, and many other game and film projects, said teamwork mattered a great deal. He noted that scores like this can take years to develop, so steady collaboration with other creatives becomes essential from start to finish.

When discussing the foundation for a Modern Warfare score, Graves said he does not usually revisit earlier entries in the series. He did admit, though, that the feel of the original Modern Warfare 2 offered a small spark of inspiration.

He stressed that he tries to avoid closely studying music from older franchise entries unless a developer specifically asks for that approach. In his view, that flexibility matters because Infinity Ward has encouraged fresh ideas and supported a soundtrack that feels as grand and tailored as the gameplay.
